A year ago, we founded BioBots in a dorm room on top of a noisy college bar with the mission of conquering the largest mystery of our generation – life. Disillusioned with existing tools and technologies for engineering organisms, and inspired by the idea of biology as technology, we launched BioBots with a command: “Build with Life.”
Here at BioBots, we aim to create a culture of collaboration around 3D biological printing. We envision a world where researchers, doctors, 3D bioprinter manufacturers, software companies, lab equipment companies, and perhaps most importantly, DIY 3D bioprinting enthusiasts can coexist and cooperate on groundbreaking work in an open...
Mary Shelley published her magnum opus, Frankenstein, in 1818. It was at this point in human history that the burgeoning scientific revolution of the 19th century ushered in one of the most awe-inspiring eras of progress and innovation the world has ever seen, which culminated in the consummate fruition of the industrial revolution.
Mother Nature is a master engineer. Through years of evolution, it has fine-tuned the relationship between structure and function for all organisms. By turning to nature for inspiration, scientists, builders, inventors, and thinkers have improved the lives of individuals every since the dawn of mankind.

As a species, we’ve had incredible success building machines that have completely changed our way of life. Ranging from the first computers to today’s cellphones, we have engineered some phenomenal systems. And yet, the most precise and well-articulated systems remain those that nature has built. Our human body is an example of one such...
